Join us this week as we travel to a long time ago (in 1969) to the final frontier (of an abandoned air field) as we watch the Scooby-Doo Where are You episode "Spooky Space Kook". What sport equipment does the ghost's air craft remind us of? What area of study is Velma completely useless in? And where is the best place to hide a key? All these answers and more await inside the Scooby Zone.
Hello, and welcome to the Scooby-Zone, the podcast where breakfast is served as we watch a bit of Scooby-Doo media. I'm Rob. And I'm Katie. And today we'll be watching Spooky Space Kook, episode 15 of Scooby-Doo. Where are you?
SPEAKER_02Oh, episode 15, guys.
SPEAKER_01It's my favorite one.
SPEAKER_02I was gonna say it's your favorite episode.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so I'm gonna be biased with the monster.
SPEAKER_02You're gonna definitely be biased with the and bias of the ranking, too. Most likely. Most likely. We'll see what happens. Yeah, we'll see if we go you'll break even on this one. Yeah. Yeah. Pretty good episode.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. It's a great episode.
SPEAKER_02Well, I said, you know.
SPEAKER_01You know, this I swear, like, this is the episode that I usually think is as the quintessential Scooby-Doo episode.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, I can see that.
SPEAKER_01Um like I think all of the jokes are just like spot on on this episode.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um so you guys can find us at the Scooby-Zone on Facebook, the Scooby Zone Podcast at Instagram. I don't remember a Twitter candle off the top of my head.
SPEAKER_02Oh, geez.
SPEAKER_01I think it's at the Scooby Zone.
SPEAKER_02I think so. That probably sounds about right. So quote us on that though, guys. Right. Apparently we don't. Oh man.
SPEAKER_01Uh-huh. You know, you can find us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube. Clearly, you found us somewhere that you're listening to us right now.
SPEAKER_02Clearly, somehow you did.
SPEAKER_01You know, make sure to leave comments, reviews, subscribe. You know, send us emails at ScoobyZone Podcast at gmail.com. We'd love to hear from you guys.
SPEAKER_02Yes, we would. How many times we have to say we'd love to hear from you, and yet nobody's doing anything. It's like, come on, guys.
SPEAKER_01They try their best.
SPEAKER_02I suppose, but only one person commented who was last week's guest host, who?
SPEAKER_01Well, a few weeks back.
SPEAKER_02A few weeks back. Yeah, a few weeks back. Yep.
SPEAKER_01But still. We'd love to hear from you guys. You know, any questions you have for us, any comments you want to share with us. You know, what you think we can improve on.
SPEAKER_02If there is anything, but I don't want to toot my own horn. There might be some things.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Um, so I think that is all of the fun, easy jobs to start.
SPEAKER_02I think so too.
SPEAKER_01So uh, you know, I think we should be about ready to watch the episode. You guys can too.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01Uh Scooby-Doo Where Are You is still on Tubi. Yep, if you're using streaming services, otherwise the entire series is available on DVD and Blu-ray.
SPEAKER_02Yep. Or VHS for some of those who have VHS, but I don't know if Spooky Cook was on VHS. Unless he's on a different one, I don't have anything for them per se.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'd have to look at how many of the Cartoon Network's classic Scooby-Doo VHS tapes there were. I mean, I have a whole bunch of them, but yet none of them are the spook spooky space kook, so maybe that one didn't I want to say it did make the cut, but but maybe it It would be weird because you know, there's 25 episodes of Where Are You, which would equate to You know, 12, 13 VHS tapes. Right. Depending on how they wanted to break those up.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. But then there are some that are duplicates too, so that doesn't help. Like there are some that have more you know, more episodes repeating on certain ones or whatever, so that doesn't it doesn't help either.
SPEAKER_01It just seems weird that out of all of the Scooby-Doo episodes available from 1969 to the early nineties, yeah. That they wouldn't at least do all of Where Are You?
SPEAKER_02Like Right, why wouldn't you? I mean, back in the back in the day, VHS taste was how people watched stuff. That was home entertainment, you know, that was a huge thing.
SPEAKER_01And I feel like Scooby-Doo Where Are You is like the purest form of Scooby-Doo that is protected by pop culture obsession.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's definitely true.
SPEAKER_01You know, when something gets big enough to be a part of pop culture, it's always remembered in its like most basic form.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01You know, because yeah, you can talk to people who don't know anything about Star Wars. They'll know who Darth Vader is.
SPEAKER_02Right. They'll somehow know who he is.
SPEAKER_01But they won't know who like Ventress is.
SPEAKER_02Right. Well, yeah. You have to watch the Clone Wars series in order to watch that, in order to know her. You know, but I mean it's just Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You know, or exp or you know, they'll dive into any of the expanded universe.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01But the series is also available digitally for purchase on you know platforms like Amazon Prime, yep, Fandango, which used to be Voodoo, possibly iTunes, not 100% sure on that. You know, if you guys look for it, you can find it. Anyways, we're gonna go split up and look for some clues, and we will be right back. And we're back. That was spooky space kook, and it was more silly than spooky.
SPEAKER_02I know, definitely more silly than spooky. Yep, got that right.
SPEAKER_01But I guess silly space kook doesn't sound as Scooby.
SPEAKER_02No, it does. It has to be spooky space kook. That sounds better.
SPEAKER_01Alright. Okay, let's go ahead and take this from the top.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01You know, we open up seeing a flying ship, spaceship, pan across the sky. And you gotta say, you know what, it looks like a badminton birdie.
SPEAKER_02It does, doesn't it? You got that one right, huh?
SPEAKER_01You know, just a little more beaten up.
SPEAKER_02A little more beaten up, must have been thrown, tossed around a few times.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, which is weird. I would have expected a lot more spaceship designs in like the late 60s, early 70s to be more like flying saucers.
SPEAKER_02Right. You know, something like that was the time for that.
SPEAKER_01Something more like quote unquote lazy.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You know?
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01Because yeah, like we're still a good couple of years out before a lot of the more bigger sci-fi things, I think.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, or before that.
SPEAKER_01I don't know when Star Trek came out.
SPEAKER_02That one I won't be able to tell you. I don't know much about the older, older Star Trek.
SPEAKER_01But even then, like, I think the original Enterprise was this like a big oval-shaped thing with more ovals.
SPEAKER_02Something like that.
SPEAKER_01Oh well, this is Scooby.
SPEAKER_02This is Scooby, not Star Trek. We shouldn't get the two somehow confused.
SPEAKER_01Right. We then see a glowing ghost in a spacesuit.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01Walk up to the screen, just laughing.
SPEAKER_02Laughing, laughing himself silly?
SPEAKER_01Yep. You know, where the inside of his domed helmet then flashes red as he laughs.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, of course.
SPEAKER_01Um you know, if his spacesuit kind of looks like Buzz Lightyear's just missing the buttons.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it does.
SPEAKER_01So does this mean the space kook is the ghost of Buzz Lightyear?
SPEAKER_02It might be. He was thinking of that way.
SPEAKER_01Or, you know, just coincidence. I could be further proof George Lucas, you know, watched Star Wars, because he helped create Pixar.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that is true. Yep.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, at least he helped create the software for Pixar.
SPEAKER_02Right. Yep, of course, you know that little tab in information.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_02Uh-huh. Oh.
SPEAKER_01You know, we then cut to Mr. Inc. driving down the road when all of a sudden the mystery machine just stops.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01Where it's not broken down.
SPEAKER_02Nope, not yet.
SPEAKER_01Fred just forgot to put gas in it.
SPEAKER_02Fred, it's your mystery machine. Why did you not fill it up on the way out of town?
SPEAKER_01Why'd you not have a spare can of gas?
SPEAKER_02That that is true too. I'm like, what are you doing, Fred?
SPEAKER_01Uh whoops. You know, they spot a farmhouse nearby, so they think, hey, maybe they've got some gas they can give us or sell us. So they go talk to the old farmer.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01When he brandishes a gun at them, telling them to get off his lawn.
SPEAKER_02I mean, that'd be a way to get me to get off someone's lawn and holding up a shotgun.
SPEAKER_01He's sick of them reporters coming up onto his property.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, well, I would be sick too, sick of it too, if they were coming up day and night, you know.
SPEAKER_01They're told that, you know, reporters have been bothering him ever since it showed up.
SPEAKER_02It, what's it?
SPEAKER_01It.
SPEAKER_02Okay, okay.
SPEAKER_01That there was a mysterious aircraft landing near the abandoned airfield, and then all of a sudden it came out of it, and that's kind of scaring everyone off.
SPEAKER_02Sounds like it's scaring everyone off.
SPEAKER_01Well, the game manages to get gas from the farmer. Yep. And Fred decides to drive him to the old abandoned airfield.
SPEAKER_02What a great idea, Fred. Definitely a great idea there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. They see that it's locked and figure, well, nothing they can do.
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_01When the wind blows open the gate.
SPEAKER_02Opens up. Creeks open.
SPEAKER_01It wasn't locked, it was just closed.
SPEAKER_02Yep, it wasn't locked.
SPEAKER_01So, you know, maybe some light trespassing on their part this time.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, light trespassing. Well, it wasn't locked, so you know, the wind opened it up.
SPEAKER_01They follow some glowing footprints to a shed where they hear a humming sound.
SPEAKER_02Hmm.
SPEAKER_01Shaggy goes up to the window. Fred asks what he sees, and he sees Scooby-Doo's inside.
SPEAKER_02What would Scooby-Dooby doing in the in the room?
SPEAKER_01You know, that's a good question. Shaggy turns around to ask Scooby and asks how, you know, how to get inside.
SPEAKER_02And how do you get out so fast?
SPEAKER_01When, you know, it's determined that, oh, the window's just that dirty.
SPEAKER_02Yep, of course it is. Mm-hmm. Yep.
SPEAKER_01You know, the door's unlocked, so they go in and they find generator that's still warm. Which must have been the source of the humming stone. Yeah. I'm curious as to what the because we're never told really what that generator is powering.
SPEAKER_02Right. We're not ever talking.
SPEAKER_01Unless it's just providing energy to the whole thing.
SPEAKER_02It could be. Yeah, that could be what it's doing. Yeah. That would make sense.
SPEAKER_01But I would assume with some of the other things we see later, like it would still consistently be running. Right. I don't know how generators work.
SPEAKER_02I wouldn't know either, but you know, they usually power up a house, you know, they power up Yeah. You know, they power up certain things like that. So But that's a big gen it's a big generator for doing a whole airfield.
SPEAKER_01Yep. You know, they look outside and see a ghostly spacecraft touching down.
SPEAKER_02Uh oh.
SPEAKER_01And so they split up to investigate.
SPEAKER_02Of course they do. What else are they gonna do?
SPEAKER_01Yep. Shaggy and Scooby are wandering around. Shaggy pulls out some peanuts, which Scooby then steals.
SPEAKER_02All of what's in his hand, not just two or three.
SPEAKER_01Yep, so Shaggy is like, let's see you do that again, wise guy. Yep. Pours some more peanuts into his hand and tosses them for Scooby to catch them.
SPEAKER_02And he goes over, he runs over so excited to go get them.
SPEAKER_01Yep, when they're caught by the ghost.
SPEAKER_02Who's laughing about it?
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_02Maybe he was hungry too. Maybe because you know, someone ate his dinner. Maybe he's hungry and wants the peanuts.
SPEAKER_01He didn't either Scooby didn't eat his dinner yet.
SPEAKER_02Well, maybe he doesn't know that. He's coming over for a snack. Maybe he's hungry.
SPEAKER_01So Shaggy and Scooby run off. They hide in a broken down plane in pilot hats.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So you can add air pilots to the cowardly costume compendium. Yep, of course. You know, when the space kook comes up behind them, and in order to expertly get away, Shaggy deploys the emergency raft.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01Which inflates and pushes Shaggy and Scooby out the nose of the plane's cockpit. Yep. Where they then land on the propeller of a nearby plane. And go and you know, ditch the ghost.
SPEAKER_02Yep. Do a pretty good job at that. Maybe they're experts in ditching ghosts too.
SPEAKER_01We got to fret and the girls outside of machine shop.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01In which you know they go inside.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_01Either Daphne or Velma asks where they are. It's like the sign outside said machine shop.
SPEAKER_02I said machine shop. Why wouldn't you know that?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And Daphne remarks how it's all dirty inside with you know, all greasy, and Fred notices that it's fresh grease.
SPEAKER_02Hmm.
SPEAKER_01You know, they're observing, you know, trying to figure out like why the grease is fresh. When you know what was you know, these tools have been used recently. When all of a sudden Fred gets hoisted up by a crane, and you know, he calls down, you know, asks to get him down. There has to be a button or a switch somewhere. Right. And points out, like, Velma, surely you know what it is.
SPEAKER_02But that's not her cup of tea.
SPEAKER_01Velma's like, mechanics aren't my cup of tea.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_01And don't call me Shirley.
SPEAKER_02Like, don't call me Shirley. Okay.
SPEAKER_01It's an episode at an airfield. There had to be an airport uh airplane joke in here somewhere.
SPEAKER_02There had to be somewhere. Yep.
SPEAKER_01You know, so they go off to find Shag and Scoob, and Fred remarks how he feels like a side of beef.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01Or a slab of beef.
SPEAKER_02I think it was side of beef. Yeah, I feel like a side of beef.
SPEAKER_01So Shaggy and Scooby find where all the parachutes are kept.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01They, you know, they go inside and they see a dummy wearing a parachute descending from the ceiling. Whoops. So they go hide in a pile of parachutes.
SPEAKER_02Well, where else would you hide?
SPEAKER_01You know. I think Shaggy comes up first, and then Scooby comes up with a parachute over looking like a ghost.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01You know, Shaggy remarks that there's a ghost, hides under a parachute, while Scooby takes his parachute off and sees Shaggy looking like a ghost. And so they both run out with parachutes over them.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01Right past Daphne and Velma.
SPEAKER_02Of course.
SPEAKER_01Who remarks out, you know, two ghosts, one of which has paws.
SPEAKER_02Right. Well, who else would that be if they had paws?
SPEAKER_01Figure it's Shaggy and Scooby.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_01And comment how you must have scared yourself silly.
SPEAKER_02We were just looking for you guys.
SPEAKER_01You know, so they go and get Fred down. So Shaggy's gotta be an expert in mechanics. If he was able to get Fred down, if the others couldn't.
SPEAKER_02No, of course not. Well that's not her cup, that's not the cup of tea.
SPEAKER_01While they're standing there, you know, Fred was trying out his Luke Skywalker cosplay by removing his left hand.
SPEAKER_02And Shaggy's laughing at him as he's holding.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I think Shaggy's laughing because I think he told a joke how Fred could have scared the ghost.
SPEAKER_02Right, oh man.
SPEAKER_01But, you know, Fred mentions how, you know, Shaggy, you were pretty vague on describing the ghost.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_01Shaggy's like, well, you could say he looked something like that. Pointing right at the ghost walking towards them.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01Shag and Scoob run off.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01Fred comments, you know, in a case like this, Shag and Scoob did exactly the right thing. Let's scram.
SPEAKER_02Let's scram. Yep. They all take a chapter, uh take a page out of Scooby and Shaggy's book.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Shaggy and Scooby end up in the mess hall.
SPEAKER_02Yep, they do.
SPEAKER_01Shaggy, surprisingly, doesn't know that mess hall equals kitchen.
SPEAKER_02How could he not? They love the kitchen. How could they not know the mess hall?
SPEAKER_01I think it has to do with Shaggy's not in the military.
SPEAKER_02Oh, okay, that would make sense, but you know.
SPEAKER_01That I'm fairly confident that this abandoned airfield was an airfield for the Air Force, if anything else.
SPEAKER_02It could be.
SPEAKER_01You know, with all of the military stuff around.
SPEAKER_02Right. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um. You know. So they go inside, they start scouring for food.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_01Scooby opens the fridge and finds a jar of olives.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01A thin of ham. And a small rotisserie chicken.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01Scooby eats the ham and the chicken. And 99.9% of the olives.
SPEAKER_02Like, when did he eat the olive? You saw me eat the ham. You saw me eat the chicken. When did he eat?
SPEAKER_01I don't know, but at least he left one for Shaky.
SPEAKER_02He always leaves the olive. Haven't you noticed that in some of the episodes? At least you left me the olive.
SPEAKER_01You know, Shaggy remarks how, you know, you found a clue, Scooby-Doo. What would a ghost from space keep ham and chicken around for? Yeah, what would Why would he do the ghost from space don't eat? I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Maybe a ghost doesn't know that. Does a ghost know that?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Although they had to deal with Redbeard last week, so Shaggy should have the assumption that ghosts eat. Because he had to cook ghost pirates too. Yep. You know, they go outside to go find the others to let them know what they found. They see the ghost. They run back into the mess hall. Scooby decides to make a clean getaway by hiding in an automatic dishwasher. When Shaggy accidentally steps in a bucket. Yep. And when trying to shake the bucket off his foot, turns on the dishwasher.
SPEAKER_02So he's an he's an expert in washing a dog?
SPEAKER_01He's an expert at using an automatic dishwasher to wash a dog.
SPEAKER_02He knows the button to hit, he knows how to start it up.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_02Oh man.
SPEAKER_01Scooby comes out, Shaggy makes a joke about a clean getaway.
SPEAKER_02Isn't it didn't he say pristine getaway? He said clean getaway. Oh, I thought he said pristine.
SPEAKER_01Because Scooby just got cleaned.
SPEAKER_02Well, right, but you know.
SPEAKER_01We cut uh Fred and the girls. You know, they're not too worried about running back into the space kook. So they're wandering around, come across a barrel with a newspaper inside.
SPEAKER_02That's what you decided. No, it is Fred a bit.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And it's got glowing dots on it. Oh. That turn out to be glowing fingerprints.
SPEAKER_02Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_01There's nothing too spectacular in the paper other than um, you know, one article that was made special attention to either by circling or underlining it about mysterious aircraft at the airfield.
SPEAKER_02Yep. Dear Fred, you gotta hold it like this. Like, really? Why don't you do a hold like this? Okay.
SPEAKER_01You know, we cut back to Shag and Scoob. They're coming out of some trash cans they were hiding in.
SPEAKER_02They're an expert hiding in trash cans now, too. They're an expert hair.
SPEAKER_01Scooby makes a loud noise. Shaggy tells them to be quiet. They hear some more crashing. Shaggy repeats to be quiet, and Scooby points it wasn't him. It was the ghost.
SPEAKER_02It was the it was the ghost. It wasn't me.
SPEAKER_01They go hide in the supply depot. They use a key to lock the door. Shaggy tells Scooby to hide the key.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01Scooby does expertly hides it out a window when they notice a back door.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01So they push a desk in front of it.
SPEAKER_02Of course. That would definitely work. Why wouldn't it?
SPEAKER_01Wouldn't you know that? The door opens the other way.
SPEAKER_02Oh, it does? Oh man.
SPEAKER_01So the ghost opens the door the other way. So they run to the door that they locked.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_01Shaggy asks Scooby for the key. Scooby tells Shaggy he hid the key out the window.
SPEAKER_02You threw the key out the window.
SPEAKER_01They have to get that key quick.
SPEAKER_02I know.
SPEAKER_01They jump out the window, grab the key. Now, what would you do in this situation? And what do you think is the correct thing to do? Is it A, you're outside, just run off, or B, jump back in where the ghost is to unlock the door you locked to run outside.
SPEAKER_02I mean, we're talking about Scooby logic. I'm gonna go with B. We're gonna run over to go back.
SPEAKER_01Well, that's what Shag and Scoob do too, so that's gotta be the correct choice.
SPEAKER_02That's gotta be. There's no other way to do it.
SPEAKER_01And that moment is what I just find as like the perfect moment to kind of define the ridiculousness of Scooby-Doo.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I definitely agree with that one.
SPEAKER_01I don't know how many times they do off brand versions of this gig.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I don't know. I guess we'd have to see.
SPEAKER_01But like it's like this this is a gig that sticks out in my mind. Yeah, they barricade themselves in a place. Turns out that there's another way in that they overlook.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01And they now have to convoluted get themselves out.
SPEAKER_02Uh-huh. I don't know about this way out, but alright.
SPEAKER_01You know. You know, they eventually run into Fred and the girls, and they end up at the Airfield's motor pool. They find a Jeep that has gasoline in the exhaust pipe.
SPEAKER_02But it has flat tires on it. How is it supposed to go anywhere?
SPEAKER_01You know, that's a good question. And Fred and Shaggy discover like there's an extra set of wheels underneath.
SPEAKER_02Is it wheels or wheels?
SPEAKER_01Wheels. You know. The Jeep then drives off by itself.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01Right as the space kook comes out of the back of a truck. A truck. And then a bunch of the other doors around the motor pool open up to reveal more space kooks.
SPEAKER_02Jumping jelly beans.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Uh-huh. Yep. You know, they run off. Shaggy and Scooby run up a tower where Shaggy finds a microphone and a tape recorder, and it's gotta be hooked up to the sound system.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_01You know, we gotta get Fred and the girls up there on the double.
SPEAKER_02Yep, on the double.
SPEAKER_01So Scooby pulls out a bugle and does a bugle call. Attracting the attention of the ghosts.
SPEAKER_02Of course I would attract the attention of the ghosts.
SPEAKER_01They pile a bunch of chairs on top of the door.
SPEAKER_02How would the chairs be able to go?
SPEAKER_01But that doesn't keep the ghost out.
SPEAKER_02No, of course not.
SPEAKER_01So as a last resort, they use a parachute and jump from the tower.
SPEAKER_02Only as a last resort.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. It's at this point the farmer has arrived on the scene with the sheriff.
SPEAKER_02But the sheriff.
SPEAKER_01You know, he called the sheriff when he saw the kid's van parked outside the airfield and got worried for him.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01When they see the space kook running.
SPEAKER_02In the opposite direction?
unknownYeah. Yep.
SPEAKER_01And, you know, they chase after him. He goes into a wind tunnel.
SPEAKER_02That's definitely a bad idea, that one.
SPEAKER_01They close the door and they immediately turn it on.
SPEAKER_02Of course they do. Come on, Freddie. Turn it on.
SPEAKER_01Basically, the wind tunnel blows the costume off the ghost.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01And it is a person we have not seen at all this whole episode.
SPEAKER_02No, we haven't we don't know exactly.
SPEAKER_01The farmer tells us that it's Henry Bascombe, who's his neighbor.
SPEAKER_02Ah, his greedy neighbor, that's right.
SPEAKER_01You know, they figure, you know, he was using rubber boots to make the strange glowing tracks.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01They figure the projector and sound system that Shaggy and Scooby found was used to create the ghost ship.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_01You know, the flying chip and the sound effects. Yep, all the sound effects. Yep. You know, they figure, you know, it's probably stuffed gummies. All of the space kooks they saw, and the Jeep was probably remote controlled. That would sound about what they couldn't figure out is why. But the sheriff has the answer for that.
SPEAKER_02Yep, sheriff, it's good. The sheriff is good this time around.
SPEAKER_01He tells them that, you know, there's plans on the airfield opening back up and they needed more land for jets.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_01So the plan was that the you know, the ghosts would scare everyone off so they could buy up the land cheap.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You know, that is essentially the end of the episode.
SPEAKER_02Yep. That sounds like the end of it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01No, and what an episode it was.
SPEAKER_02Of course it was. It was your favorite episode. It is.
SPEAKER_01You know.
SPEAKER_02Definitely.
SPEAKER_01So we get fun responsibilities.
SPEAKER_02Yay, fun responsibilities.
SPEAKER_01Well, there are no Scooby snacks at all in this episode.
SPEAKER_02No, but apparently there are peanuts. That doesn't count. We're not gonna add those peanuts.
unknownNope.
SPEAKER_02Well, he only eats a certain amount and then the ghost gets the other half.
SPEAKER_01So Yep. So I forgot to write down what our current snack intake total was.
SPEAKER_02Oh gosh.
SPEAKER_01So we'll have that for you next week, because it didn't change at all from last week. No. Because I mean the you know, the peanuts weren't a bribe or anything.
SPEAKER_02No, they weren't, but you know, they were hungry, so they wanted to eat something, you know.
SPEAKER_01So now we can go straight to the Scooby-Zone Manifest of Monsters.
SPEAKER_02Ooh, the Manifest. Oh boy. All right.
SPEAKER_01The current Manifest of Monsters.
SPEAKER_02Oh, there's a lot of them.
SPEAKER_01Yes. At 18, the bottom of the barrel, we've got Frankenstein's monster.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01Above him at 17, we've got the Ape Man. Of course. The Fortune Teller at 16.
SPEAKER_02Fortune teller.
SPEAKER_01Vasquez Castle Ghost at 15. Yep. 14 is the witch. Yep. 13 is the Black Knight. 12 is the Mummy.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_0111 is the Minor 49er. 10 is the Indian Witch Doctor.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_019 is Captain Cutler. 8 is the Werewolf. 7 is Charlie the Robot. Yep. 6 is the Ghost Clown. 5 is Redbeard the Pirate.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_014 is Pietro the Puppet Master. Or the Cloaked Cavalier.
SPEAKER_02Cloaked Cavalier. Yep.
SPEAKER_013 is the Franken Vampire.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_012 is the Zombie.
SPEAKER_02The Zombie.
SPEAKER_01And so far the best ghost is the ghost of Elias Kingston.
SPEAKER_02Yep. He's the best so far.
SPEAKER_01You already know where I want to play Space Kook. So.
SPEAKER_02You want to put him in first, don't you?
SPEAKER_01I think he he's a good ghost.
SPEAKER_02Well, I'm I'm not saying that he isn't a good ghost, but however, he's he didn't really do any grabbing. He didn't really get to catch anything.
SPEAKER_01You want to get technical about it. He hoisted Fred up into the air.
SPEAKER_02I suppose he hoisted Fred for like a side of beef. But I mean, you gotta go back to Elias Kingston. He he taught them off camera. He's at least not he can be higher up, but I don't think he's at least not first place yet. No one has been a lot of things.
SPEAKER_01Like I said, there I hey, I said that there'd be some biases here. So like a lot of this is being deferred to you right now.
SPEAKER_02Oh great, so it's on me now to figure out what it is.
SPEAKER_01No, it's like okay. Well, okay, we've got 18 on the list so far.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01Is he top half or bottom half?
SPEAKER_02I'd put him, I'll put him in the top half. Okay, so I don't know exactly where he wanna put.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so halfway number nine is Captain Cutler.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_01I honestly even unbiasedly, I do think that he's better. He's better. Like his design. I think design alone puts him up into the top five.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I agree.
SPEAKER_01You know, his yeah, his design is just so on point.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_00He's definitely b better than Redbeard.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I don't agree with that.
SPEAKER_00I don't want to say he's better than the vampire. The puppet master and the vampire.
SPEAKER_02Right, no, I I don't agree with that one too.
SPEAKER_01I think it's then a matter of do we think he's better than Zombie?
SPEAKER_02I mean, they both had grab times. I mean it was. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But the space coop had it where he made it look like there were more of him.
SPEAKER_02Right. So what, you want to put him at number two? Is that what you're telling me? Put him at least at number two? Icause we know he hasn't beaten out Elias Kingston. I know you're biased on him, and so I understand. But I think he's just because looking at everything Elias Kingston did, yeah. How good he was off camera.
SPEAKER_01Come on, it's one of those things. It's like if we excluded Zombie because of being a quote unquote henchman, I think it'd be no contest of Space Koop being at number two. But because the zombie, even despite being a henchman, was just as involved as the witch.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, if not more.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. That he more he did more of the that even with my biased perspective.
SPEAKER_02At least he made the top three, yeah, the top five. You know, at least he did probably better than you. Well, you wanted to be number one, obviously, but I'm like, I don't know, I don't know if we're ever gonna I don't know if we're gonna get anything to get past Elias Kingston. Honestly, I didn't think he was gonna be you know what I mean? I didn't think he was gonna make that you know what I mean, because I didn't watch the episode that much, but yet seeing how much he grabbed off camera, it's like this guy deserves the top spot. I mean, I don't I mean we'll see what happens in further episodes, but yeah, it's I don't know.
SPEAKER_01It's definitely it's one of those things where it's like thinking of what ghosts I know 100% for sure are coming up, right? Because there are so many ghosts where I think their designs beat out Elias Kinston's design, right? Yeah, but like trying to remember like what they do.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01You know, it's like do they do anything that I would constitute better than grabbing Shaggy off screen a couple of times?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's quite a few. I don't know why. You really like grabbing Shaggy a few times.
SPEAKER_01That if I think of it, I think there may be for sure one contender that I think could beat out Elias Kinston.
SPEAKER_02Okay. I'll take your word on that one. We'll see what happens when we get to that Pacific episode.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02That's all it is, folks. We'll wait and see.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so at number three we three, we have the space coupe.
SPEAKER_02There you go. We made the top.
SPEAKER_01You know it's crazy to think we've got ten episodes left after this one of Where Are You?
SPEAKER_02Well, it's actually ten more monsters.
SPEAKER_01You know, minimum of ten more.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01Maximum of I think eleven, because we'll probably mystery mask mix up, we will probably split. Oh, right, the henchman and the Yeah, I know it's the scare pair and I don't even remember the name of the main ghost.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we'd have to.
SPEAKER_01But that is a matter for another time.
SPEAKER_02It is.
SPEAKER_01Now we move to the Fred Jones failure files.
SPEAKER_02Hey, the Fred Jones failure. Wait, it wasn't really much of a tri- Oh, okay, so we're gonna call this one the wind tunnel?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_01You know, because they did trap him in there.
SPEAKER_02I guess they well, he walked in by himself. But they just trapped him in there. I mean, it did work. I mean, it did work off a hit.
SPEAKER_01No, like it'll be it'll be interesting when we go through this at the end of the series.
SPEAKER_02To see where everything lines.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and see how many like are just crazy contraptions and how however many are just a matter of convenience.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_01But all right, the Fred Jones failure files at 15 is the tapestry shag you try to trap a vampire with.
SPEAKER_02Well, not the best one.
SPEAKER_01No. 14 is just a big slide. A big slide. 13 is instant suds. Yep. 12 is a stampede of dogs.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_0111 is a biplane homicide from Scooby in a museum. 10 is Scooby-tying a vampire up by his feet. Empire Strikes Back style. You know.
SPEAKER_02I love it.
SPEAKER_01A good number of years before that movie came out.
SPEAKER_02Right. So he so George Lucas must have watched watched the Gaggle of Galaxy Ghost figure that one out.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Nine is beating the ghost with a drum and a tuba after he falls from some scaffolding.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01Eight is using a crate and a giant magnet to stop a robot.
SPEAKER_02It it somewhat works, but it's until sabotage. Until sabotage happens. Hypnotize the ghost clown and thinking he's a chimp.
SPEAKER_01Yep, making him hypnotize himself. You know. Six is lawnmower basketball, you know, riding a lawnmower, crashing into a ghost into something.
SPEAKER_02He's always crashing. He must try to must want to make them into a ghost. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Number five is probably one of my favorites, is the automatic pogo stick.
SPEAKER_02No, it's a jackhammer.
SPEAKER_01You know, four is just a chandelier, just old trap or werewolf.
SPEAKER_02But it works. I mean, honestly, it must be a very heavy. Well, it's an old chandelier, so it might be very heavy, which makes sense. And he seems to have some difficulty getting it off. Yep.
SPEAKER_01Three is some special effects nonsense that was used to catch the best ghost.
SPEAKER_02The best ghost ever, so far.
SPEAKER_01Number two is the better mouse trap. Better mouse trap. You know, which is just all sorts of complex.
SPEAKER_02Complex shenanigans.
SPEAKER_01And so the best trap is, you know, just a money pit.
SPEAKER_02Money pit.
SPEAKER_01You know, smacking a witch and a zombie with a tree branch onto a cart into an armored car.
SPEAKER_02And it works.
SPEAKER_01Using money as bait.
unknownMoney, money, money.
SPEAKER_01So where do you think a wind tunnel falls onto this list?
SPEAKER_02I mean, man, I mean it's it's not like as much shenanigans as like a lot of the upper ones. You know what I mean? Yeah. I mean, I'm not saying it's a low one, but yet I'm honestly I think it's at least like in the seven. Like seven, eight, nine, like in that. I think it's in that kind of thing.
SPEAKER_00Okay, about midway.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Now okay. I mean, unless you think Do we think it's better or worse than the mirror?
SPEAKER_02I mean, I know the mirror is just hypnotizing the ghost, but I mean I I mean I don't honestly see it being better than any of the six. Like six like the top six. You know what I mean? Like I mean, it's I mean, it's not as much shenanigans as well.
SPEAKER_01Do we think it's better or worse than just throwing a tuba after he falls into a drink?
SPEAKER_02I I think it's probably better than drumming a tuba. I mean, honestly.
SPEAKER_01Do we think it's better than trying to use a giant crate that the robot runs through, or then a giant magnet? If it all wasn't sabotage, it might have been Honestly, because of the absurd dimensions of that magnet, like that's a giant acne magnet.
SPEAKER_02Like, yeah, that's right, it's acne. So you can't.
SPEAKER_01Honestly, that one should have been up higher than it should have been.
SPEAKER_02Well, we had other we had a bunch of other traps come in the way of it that were better than that one.
SPEAKER_01Well, yes. Yes, but also, you know, sabotage.
SPEAKER_02I know. If it wasn't sabotage, it would have probably would have been at least in the top three and top five. I mean, honestly, that's what I'm thinking. At least have been there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So, you know, that's not a nice respectable number nine.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01And all about the middle of the list right now.
SPEAKER_02Right. Yep.
SPEAKER_01Alright, so then for the table of snacks, how many snacks do you think this episode brings to the table?
SPEAKER_02Oh boy. I you are gonna be up there. I alright.
SPEAKER_01I will say my opinion first. Okay. You know, in my perfectly biased opinion, uh-huh. And my reasons for my biased opinion.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_01I do think that this is a five.
SPEAKER_02Okay, here we go.
SPEAKER_01And here's the thing. Yes, it is missing, you know, the iconic, would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for those meddling kids line and a musical chase sequence. But besides those two points, this hits every single point that I think of when it comes to classic Scooby-Doo.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You know, maybe minus Velma losing her glasses, but as I discovered, that actually doesn't happen all that often. No. You know, we get the mystery machine kind of quote unquote breaking down. You know, we've got this shaggy and Scooby shenanigans, you know, they wear a sort of costume hiding from the ghost. They have that ridiculous mix-up when running away, where it's like you threw the key out the window. What you're outside, just keep running.
SPEAKER_02Just keep running. But no, we gotta run back. Go back in. Yep. You know.
SPEAKER_01You know, you know, Daphne being danger prone.
SPEAKER_02Of course, but at least she didn't at least she wasn't the one who got Fred up that time. You think it would have been ever who did that.
SPEAKER_01No, and like the the extent of her danger proneness really in this episode is just her being kind of dumb.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, I agree.
SPEAKER_01You know, but like but like this is like one of the episodes that I think is like, yeah, if you've never watched Scooby before and want to know just like how ridiculous it can get, like, this is the best episode.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01So that's why I think this one's a five. But you know, I mean This is an equal podcast.
SPEAKER_02I yes, an equal podcast, of course it is.
SPEAKER_01So what do you think?
SPEAKER_02I mean, I'm I would go for giving it a five. I mean, not because I'm trying to be, you know, it working agreement, but you know, I mean, you make some solid points. You know, like you say, it's someone you would show someone who hasn't seen it before that would be able to see all the Scooby shenanigans. You know, that's the classic Scooby, you know, like you say, but yeah, I mean I minus the other stuff it doesn't have, but yeah, I mean it we'll get that stuff later. Apparently later on than I thought we were gonna get it, but you know, we'll get the other stuff later on. But yeah, I mean I I guess we'll give this one a five.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and I think I mean I feel like there may have been some previous episodes we've ranked that we may have been a little too I don't want to say harsh on.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But I also think that you know while they were good episodes, like they they were still missing like one of those like iconic key components that really like push it into like a yeah, this is like a top episode, like right, yeah. If we were to make like a list of like the ten best episodes, it's like I don't know if they would really fall in the top five of that ten list.
SPEAKER_02Right, yeah, they probably wouldn't.
SPEAKER_01You know, but so you know, I think this may be our first five since what a night for a night.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think so. Cause I yeah, I think I gave it a five, didn't I? Well, it is a really iconic episode.
SPEAKER_01I mean Yes.
SPEAKER_02I mean, I believe that, you know, even though it's the pilot.
SPEAKER_01You know, it took like what, 15 episodes? Fifteen episodes. 14 more episodes from the pilot, so to get number five. Whoops. So now here's the real question.
SPEAKER_02Oh boy.
SPEAKER_01Do you think we'll get another five before we get to the end of Where Are You?
SPEAKER_02I mean, I I I could definitely see at least like maybe one more. At least one more. Yeah. I think I could see that happening. I don't know if you're I don't know if you're thinking the one I'm thinking of.
SPEAKER_01Probably M.
SPEAKER_02Oh, you think so? You're gonna challenge that one, huh?
SPEAKER_01I guess we'll just have to find out next week when we watch a night of fright is no delight. Which is a delightful episode title to say.
SPEAKER_02It is. Well, it depends on which one we're gonna rate, but you know, definitely might be up there too.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, guys, we'll be back next week with a night of fright is no delight.
SPEAKER_02Oh, alright.
SPEAKER_01And all the fun that comes with that episode.
SPEAKER_02Yep, and then the fun after the episode, too.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So until then, just remember they would have gotten away with it too.
SPEAKER_02If it weren't for those meddling kids.
